Summertime and the livin' is easy. Freedom from your desk and homework, and a whole season to do what you want. With school out for the summer, it's a life of leisure for the next few months when you’re a teenager -- not! Let's face it, it usually doesn’t take long for boredom to set in, and a lack of spending money. While working during the summer months at a fast food restaurant or in a mall is fine, why not try your hand at starting your own small business? You can be your own boss, set your own hours and best of all, there's no limit to the amount of money you can earn!

Here are a few suggestions for services you can offer during the long days of summer.

1) Babysitting/Child Care: Looking after little kids in your neighborhood is an ideal way to start saving money. You likely know parents who would love to have you look after their kids while they’re at work, or perhaps if they want to get out on weekend nights. Some may even offer live in situations where you stay for the summer during the week and go home on weekends. This is usually because the parent has long working hours. They may need a hand with some light housekeeping and putting meals together as well!

If you choose babysitting, the amount of time you dedicate is up to you. If you babysit through the day, five days per week, you’ll most likely receive a weekly set amount, with overtime for later nights. With this schedule, you’ll still have your evenings and weekends free. You may want to take a quick babysitting course, or maybe you already have.

2) Lawn Mowing Services: Elderly people will really appreciate this service, especially during the hot days of summer! When people come home from work, other things take up their time, such as dealing with their children and other household chores. Having someone mow the grass once a week can go a long way to help make their lives much easier! How much you change will depend on the size of the lawn, of course and the equipment you have available to do the job. However, keep in mind that if you're using the homeowner's equipment, most lawns shouldn't take more than an hour to do, so charge accordingly.

3) Pet Sitting or Dog Walking Service: Some pet owners who work long hours are often too busy to take care of their pets as well as they'd like to and they'd be more than happy to have someone available to keep their pet company and do little tasks they don't always have time to do. They may want you to just pop in to let the dog out or take them for a walk or, if they're going on vacation, maybe stay for a week. Whatever the terms, many people own pets, and to have someone willing to take care of them takes away a lot of stress for them, and their beloved animals.

These are only a few ideas to get you started, you may have other interests or skills you can use to earn some extra money during the long summer vacation. Just make sure you pick something you actually enjoy doing. This makes it a fun and while you have the freedom of being your own boss, you'll also experience the satisfaction of accomplishing something on your own. Whatever you choose to do, make sure you do each job to the best of your abilities, which will ensure good word of mouth that will lead to more work in the future.

Earning money is only one of the advantages to starting your own small business during your summer vacation. You’ll also learn new skills, meet new people and build confidence in your abilities -- important character builders that will stay with you throughout the long life ahead of you!
